different-hair-types-810x432The most important factor in having fabulous hair is understanding your hair type and what products are DO’s and DON’T’s. Without knowing it’s impossible for your hair to reach it’s full potential! I have put together some key tips and products for you to get your hair rocking and looking it’s best! I got some of these fab tips from Marie Claire. You are in good hands between me and their beauty experts!

 If you have FINE HAIR:

Shampoo:

DO: Try a shampoo that is body-building, because fine hair actually holds more moisture of any hair type, you don’t need extra hydration, that can weight your do down.

DON’T:  Steer clear of clarifying formulas make you scalp make more oil which equals flat hair.

TRY: Garnier Fructis Body Boost Fortifying Shampoo $4

 Conditioner:

DO: Try a product with lots of yummy proteins like oat or wheat… these will fatten up your strands making your locks appear healthier and thicker.

DON’T: No heavy conditioners, this will only weight your hair down.

TRY:Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Conditioner $4

Treatments:

DO: Use products with Keratin, this will help balance any extra moisture that results in flat hair.

DON’T: Stay away from oil! The key here is the lighter the products the better. Fine hair can’t handle oil.

TRY: Redken Extreme CAT Treatment $15

 Styling:

DO: Salt spray will give you texture that stays!

DON’T: No serums, it will make your baby fine strands greasy.

TRY: Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Hairspray $16

If you have CURLY HAIR:

Shampoo:

DO: Use a shampoo that is sulfate free, these are more gentle on curly hair strands which are prone to tangles.

DON’T: High-lather shampoos will increase tangles.

TRY: Mixed Chicks Sulfate Free Shampoo $15

Conditioner:

DO:Go with a conditioner with Wheat protein in it, this makes your curls nice and even and smoothes the hair shaft into a complete curl.

DON’T: Make sure your conditioner isn’t too light or your curls will be flying all over the place, you need something to weight your strands down a little. A conditioner with a little bit of oil is really great, I also love using a few drops of Moroccan Oil and running it through wet hair.

TRY: Aveeno Nourish+Moisturize Conditioner $8

Treatments:

DO: A Leave in conditioner that detangles. I love Matrix Biolage leave in spray, I use it after washing my hair when it’s damp.

DON’T:When you have curly hair your scalp tends to be a little more dry than normal so skip the dry shampoos or you may dry your scalp out leading to flakiness… (NOT SEXY)

TRY: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Silkening Detangler $4

Styling:

DO: H2O packed styling puddings.

DON’T: Don’t bother spending your hard earned cash on volumizers, they will make your hair crispy… no thanks.

TRY: Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Pudding $22

If your hair is CHEMICALLY TREATED:

Shampoo:

DO: If you color your hair often use a sulfate free shampoo, sulfates loosen the structure and the bonds of your strands.

DON’T: Any clear shampoos that DON”T have a milky or creamy consistency are not your friend so stay away from them. They will only strip your color.

TRY: Fekkai Advanceed PrX Reparatives Shampoo $30

Conditioner:

DO: Try an oil based conditioner, this hydrates your hair, take a long shower and really let it sit.Coloring your hair does damage so the longer you can let the conditioner sit the better, If you tend to get greasy roots easily skip your roots, the ends of your strands is where the breakage occurs so feel free to let it sit on the ends of your hair for longer.

DON’T: Conditioners that are lightweight don’t contain enough conditioners so skip them all together. They won’t do anything.

TRY: Matrix Biolage Exquisite Oil Creme Conditioner $18

Treatments:

DO: Conditioning masks. My favorite is simple. Olive Oil. Plain and simple. Put it on for 20-30 minutes, or longer if needed and rinse out. A great tip is to put the Olive Oil in a bowl and microwave it for 15-20 seconds until it is warm then apply it, twirl into a bun and clip or tie it up as to not make a mess.

DON’T: Beware of masks that have too much protein in them. The protein can make strands brittle and break and we don’t want that!

Styling:

DO: I love using serums like Moroccan Oil or any serum with shinning power. I run it through my hair after I wash it and before I blow-dry. It gives a beautiful pop and shine to my color.

DON’T: Avoid any formulas that are packed with water as this makes hair hard to blow-dry and with all that hydration in your strands it makes it hard for your hair to hold it’s style and shape.

TRY: Nexxus Frizz Defy Frizz Protection Styling Creme $12

 If your hair is THICK/COARSE:

Shampoo:

DO: Nourishing shampoo that isn’t to heavy, Anything that’s low-surfactant is key.

DON’T: Stay far away from high lather formulas, (that means when you apply it into your wet hair it gets bubbly like dish soap)

TRY: L’Oreal Paris EverCreme Nourishing Shampoo $7

Conditioner:

DO: Any conditioner with Keratin in it is a sure bet, The Keratin coats and smoothes coarse strands without leaving them heavy.

DON’T: Don’t try any conditioner that is body building, all this is going to do is make your hair heavy and it will suck the life right out of it, and you don’t want that!!!

Treatment:

DO: The richer and thicker the mask the better!

DON’T: Stay away from products with wheat proteins as this will make your hair thicker and hard to manage.

TRY: Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Treatment for Coarse Hair $12

Styling:

DO: Once again Moroccan Oil is amazing for big thick hair, it really tames it. A few drops of oil will do wonders in smoothing and controlling that gorgeous mane!

DON”T: Stay very, very far away from any type of styling wax, or you will see another side of your hair that you have never seen before… and it won’t be pretty!

TRY: Ojon Super Sleek Restorative Blowout Perfector $25
