photo-775-11I have always wondered how the geniuses at the pastry shops make those gorgeous little roses to go on top of cakes and cupcakes. I thought it would be impossible to do and would take a lot of talent. I was so wrong! I just learned how to do this and turns out it was super easy!

You will need:

69da9b85a8b57f9287cf5627b3fd81521– Fondant ( I used pink fondant from Michael’s $8) and Green for the leafs. You can also buy white fondant and add in fondant dye to make whatever color you want. If you don’t know what fondant is anytime you see a cake that looks like it is perfectly frosted with not one bump, it’s fondant that had been rolled out. Fondant is basically sugar paste and it’s really yummy.

– A rolling pin. I use a plastic one because it doesn’t stick to the fondant but you can use what ever kind you want. If you don’t have a pin and don’t want to invest in one you can use any flat surface like the bottom of a glass to flatten out the fondant. When working with fondant it’s important that the area your in is not too hot, this causes the fondant to become sticky and is hard to work with. If this happens turn the air on and then get back to work.

– A knife

rosepinkluster1– Luster Dust – If you want, not necessary.

photo444444444-21Flatten it out with your pin or glass. With your fingers make the edges a little thinner.

photo777-4Wrap it around itself. This will be the center of your flower. What size you want your finished flower will determine the size of this but I like starting smaller and then gradually making the petals bigger to get a larger rose.

2. Make a slightly (just a tiny bit bigger than the last) ball, flatten down making sort of an oval like shape. You don’t want an exact circle. Soften the edges with your fingers again and then add this to your first piece wrapping it around it.

3. Keep Repeating and rotating where you place the petals making each petal a little bit larger than the last. Keep building until you get the exact shape you want.

photo-81-1* You can also wrap the first petal (your center) around a tooth pick if you want to stick the rose into a cake rather than setting it on it.

5. Make a ball of the green fondant and flatten it out. Using your knife cut out the shape of a leaf.

If desired take the other side of your knife (the thicker dull side) and put in your stem.

pho88to-2-16. If you want your leafs to have some shape instead of sitting flat you can set them on top of something with a curve, I like using a water bottle and place in the fridge for 20 minutes. When you take it out your leaf will be dry and will have a cute shape to it.

photo-22222222-27. For a little extra something add Luster Dust! I used silver but pink would be fun too or any color!

If you have a little brush like the kind you would apply eyeshadow with that is great, if no you can use your finger to apply the dust on the edges of the petals and the leaf id you want.
