ombre-hair-inspiration-large-msg-1358558449481I bet you’ve heard of the word Ombré , I’ve heard it a lot but only when it was related to hair when it went from darker at the crown to a lighter shade gradually to the bottom.

The word itself sounds alluring, Ombré is a French word meaning “to shade” and as I’ve recently learned it related to much more than hair.

6192518208075482_bjtglwxs_c1It’s often used to describe a dip-dye effect given to fabric in which the shades of color graduate from light to dark.

The look is all about color, with the feeling an artist has dipped and shaded the colors by hand.

There are a lot of fun ways to incorporate this chic and cheap technique into your wardrobe, maybe you have a dress or top that you’re a little bored with and it could use a quick pick me up.

dipdye721My closet is definitely full of pieces I am sick of but this simple dying tip revamped a lot of my pieces and now it feels like they are new and they’re exciting again without spending more than $5 on RIT fabric dye available at Michaels Arts & Crafts!

This simple dyeing technique lends itself to all types of garments and fashion accessories so here’s what you do:

First you need to get the dye ready. To do this put on some rubber gloves and measure ½ cup liquid dye or 1 box powder dye into a disposable container. Add 1 cup salt and 4 cups very hot water and stir well.

Next pour your dye solution into a large plastic bin or container. Add 2 gallons very hot tap water and a squirt of liquid detergent and stir well.

Now get your garment wet with water and ring out. Immerse the bottom of your garment in the dye bath for as long as you need to get it the shade you want.

Then dip middle section of dress in dye bath for ½ the time you did the bottom for, gently lifting and lowering it to create lighter and darker shades or until desired shade is achieved.

Rinse fabric under cool running water, holding the lightest color at the top and last but not least wash with detergent and warm water to get all the excess dye out and enjoy your better than new creation!
