messy-desk1We all know how frustrating it can be looking for that important phone number you wrote down but it’s hiding from you somewhere underneath the vast stack papers and receipts that used to be your desk.

If you want to do away with a treasure hunt every time you need to find a reminder note or perhaps a love note here is a fun, easy and inexpensive solution.

photo-51I’m going to show you how to make yourself a chalkboard/magnetic board in one.

photo-21I started out with a pretty piece of sanded down wood.

I bought this one from Michaels Arts & Crafts for $14.99 but you can also get a normal piece of wood at Home Depot and have them cut it to the size you desire in store.

Better yet if you have a saw at home like this Ryobi 4.8-Amp Variable-Speed Jigsaw running $39.97

You can draw out a design you want on a piece of newspaper folded in the middle, draw on your design, cut out with scissors, tape it on top of your wood and you’re ready to cut. When you’re finished cutting be sure to sand it.

My favorite sander is this Ryobi 5 in Random Orbit Sander running $39.97 These are really great investment tools, they are really easy to use, and not intimidating at all and will last you forever!

photo-3-e13735890995291After your wood piece is ready paint on Magnetic Paint. I used Martha Stewart Magnetic Paint from Michaels Arts & Crafts $6.99

This small jar will last you for many projects to come!

I applied 3 coats allowing 25-30 minutes of dry time between coats.

Next using my Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paint $4.98

I gave it 3 coats, letting it dry about 5 minutes between each coat.

After my board was completely dry, about 30 minutes I wanted to add a pop of color. Using painter’s tape, I used Scotch Blue Advanced Multi Surface Tape $5.87 Home Depot (this works the best but if you don’t have any you can try masking tape too, even scotch tape wil do the trick, maybe not as well though.)

I put my tape across a section, in my case I wanted just the top section to have color, but feel free to get crazy!

Next using a mixture of Martha Stewart Pearlescent Acrylic Pink Paint and a Craft Smart Acrylic Paint each under $2 from Michaels Arts & Crafts I painted the top of my wood applying 2 coats and giving it about 5 minutes of dry time in between.

photo-3-1-e13735894393831After your board is completely dry it’s time to dress it up!

I used stickers from Michaels Arts & Crafts to personalize mine plus chalk and lots of fun magnates.

Last but not least I screwed in a small wall bracket to the back of the board so it can hand off the nail on the wall.

I hope this fun idea serves you well and de-clutters your life a little! 🙂
