kim-kOne of my favorite makeup looks of all time is the smoky eye. Some girls really get the smoky eye right like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian but if you’re like me when you’ve tried to do a fabulous smoky eye on yourself, more often than not it’s hard to get right and a lot of times women end up looking like they have raccoon eyes…not a good look.

I want to give you some fabulous smoky eye tips I learned while working with makeup artist to the stars, Scott Barnes to help you get a gorgeous and glamorous makeup look that you can do on your own at home.

The great thing about the smoky eye is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. There’s room for error but there are also a lot of smoky eye pitfalls to watch out for. Mess can be sexy but it can also be a mess.

First off. Choose a black eye pencil, Maybelline’s Expert Eyes in Black Velvet is amazing. Before using, soften the tip by waving it through the tip of the flame of a cigarette lighter a few times. This helps the pencil go on easier.

Next evaluate what your eye looks like, for example, if your eye is round, you want to avoid putting too much darkness into the middle of the eye and beneath the pupil. Instead darken the outside edges to elongate the eye and make it appear more almond shaped and bigger.

Next up, rim the inside of the eye, working the pencil in between the lashes.

Now using your finger smudge and soften the line along the upper and lower lashes.

Next you’re going to move onto to the shadow. A lot of times women think you need to use a black shadow on top of your black eyeliner but it’s much better to go with grays and browns so avoid a goth look.

To create depth, use a matte brown shadow on the lid, filling in up to the brow bone and beneath the eye. Then bring in the black. With a pointy brush apply your shadow starting in the crease of your eye and outlining the eyeball on top of the lid.

Now once you get the shape now you can play with making the shape bigger, blacker and crazier blending as far up on your brow bone as you want using a blending brush.  Last but not least, you can leave your lid open or fill it with shadow, shimmer, or glitter, anything you want, have fun with it.

Last but not least, to avoid the dark shadow falling and messing up your foundation under eyes and on your cheeks just fold a piece of tissue paper and hold it under you eye while applying your shadow.
